My name is Georgios Peikos, and I am from Greece. I studied Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Democritus University of Thrace, where I obtained my Master’s degree. During my studies, I had the opportunity to work in the fields of Information retrieval (IR) and Data mining.

As an Early Stage Researcher (ESR) in the DoSSIER project, the primary goal of my PhD is to create a search system that aids professional users in health and legal domains to achieve their undertaken search tasks. The main objective is to identify how these users interact with information and model their interactions in a decision theoretic setting. By the end of the project, we aim to propose an innovative approach capable of identifying and modelling significant domain and task-related factors to provide the user with useful information.

What fascinates you about this project?

I find it fascinating how the DoSSIER project studies the different aspects of domain-specific search by bringing together various researchers and coordinating meaningful collaborations between them. Furthermore, a unique characteristic of the project is that it mobilizes an excellent team of world-leading IR experts and industrial partners.

Being part of an excellence project like DoSSIER provides the opportunity to be part of an international and multidisciplinary team of experienced researchers who can be reached for assistance. This, aligned with the various training activities and mobility opportunities, contributes significantly to higher scientific education for an ESR.

Moreover, DoSSIER offers various networking opportunities, such as visiting several research groups, experiencing how they do research, and forming collaborations. The project also has an academic and industrial orientation, making it suitable for pursuing either an academic or a working career. Due to these characteristics, I believe that DoSSIER will significantly impact my career.

This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie grant agreement No 860721
